October Dragonfest
- Sponsored by Stan & Chris Wruble
A month or so ago, Stan Wruble presented a proposal that was hard to turn down. But, after an exorbitant amount of whining and begging on his part, we finally gave in and agreed to present his proposal to our membership.
So, here's the deal. Deal's Gap, that is.
Stan & Chris would like to provide our members with another shot at the Dragon, before the old boy goes into hibernation for the winter. And, for an added bonus, they'll be taking us into the Appalachian Mountains at the peak of autumn color.
We'll meet at the Murfreesboro Cracker Barrel (I-24 @ Exit 81B) at 7:30am on Oct. 30 for breakfast and depart at 8:30am, with a full belly, a full tank and an empty bladder. In route, we'll stop at Grumpy's, just outside of Rock Island State Park, for a break. Then we'll take more great backroads into Sweetwater, TN, with lunch at Hunter's Bakery & Cafe around 12 Noon. We'll then move on through Vonore to Hwy 73, leading into the Dragon. We'll stop briefly at Tab Cat Creek to regroup and reshuffle cars for the run across the Dragon to The Crossroads of Time.
Those who want to take another loop across the Gap, can do so. Depending on the time, the rest may press on to the Microtel, via Bootleggers Hwy 28 through Fontana, then on Hwy 143 into Robbinsville, NC. by around 4pm EDT.
Rooms will be reserved in advance for each member at a cost of roughly $75. Stan is still in search mode for a great place to dine that evening. And is also investigating some form of entertainment for the group, maybe tied into Halloween. For those of you unfamiliar with Robbinsville, it is a dry County. So, if you wish, adult beverages must be imported.
We'll be packed and ready to go at 8:30am EDT on Sunday morning. Stan is planning on breakfast at the Huddle House. We'll be leaving for Nashville via the Cherohala Skyway at 9:30am. As an added bonus, Phil Brewer is working with the Publisher of a local Sweetwater magazine, called Monroe Life, to meet up with our Club, along with a writer, for an article and a spread in one of their upcoming editions. This should add an interesting note to the trip.
Stan has us running up Hwy 360, a good motorcycle road, from Tellico Plains, through the Cherokee National Forest, to Vonore, then on to Cookeville for a late lunch, around 2pm at Cheddars. Then we'll high tail it for our perspective abodes.
Looks like a plan to us. SO, if you want to take final shot at the Dragon, enjoy a final taste of fall weather and color and 'get published' all in the same weekend, this is your chance. Just RSVP to Stan or Chris at thewrubles@comcast.net or (615) 306-1197.
