LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN FALL RUN
- SPONSORED BY THE SANDS
Based on the response to a recent club survey, our membership narrowly chose a mid-Fall run down across several mountain ranges reaching down from just north of Chattanooga into the heart of Northeastern Alabama. This one day turn-around features some of the best roads and Fall scenery in middle Tennessee & Northwestern Alabama.
We'll meet up at 8:30am CDT at the Cracker Barrel in Murfreesboro at I-24, Exit 81B. We'll head down to Monteagle on U.S. 41 and have lunch at Jim Oliver's Smokehouse Restaurant http://www.thesmokehouse.com/index.php/restaurantmenus.html at 850 West Main Street. You can enjoy a buffet country lunch, order from the menu or have breakfast.
Following lunch, we'll proceed to Sewanee and drop off the backside of the mountain on TN 56 to and through Sherwood. We'll take AL 117 through one of the prettiest little valleys you've ever laid eyes to Stevenson, AL. Then, we'll cross the beautiful Tennessee River and run up and across Sand Mountain. We'll jump up onto Lookout Mountain at Mentone, AL and follow the mountain crest southwest on AL 89 to & through Desoto State Park and further south on AL 35 to the Little River Gorge. We'll enter the Little River Canyon National Preserve which features a beautiful natural river that flows down the length of Lookout Mountain and forms one of the deepest (600 feet) canyons in the Southeast. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Little_River_Canyon_National_Preserve We'll hug the rim of the canyon on a high powered run, with stops at great overlooks on the way to the bottom .
Following a short stop at the Park Headquarters, we'll hook back to the north on AL 273, AL 15, AL 117, AL 75 & GA 136 along the crest of Sand Mountain to Randy's Restaurant at 4276 Hwy 136 in Trenton GA http://randysrestaurant.net/services (706-657-5330). Check Randy's menu for a very broad selection of food, including a Buffet, Steaks, Chicken, Pasta, Ribs, Sandwiches, Pizza and scrumptious homemade deserts. It is a favorite stop for the MCMC.
From Randy's, we'll head back up on top of Sand Mountain on GA 136 to AL 73, Right on AL 73, then left on AL County 262 to dead end, then a 'hard right' on AL County 98 straight down the side of the mountain. At bottom, turn right onto AL County 91, then right onto TN 156 at Shellmound to South Pittsburg. Then we'll hit I-24 back into Nashville about 8:00pm.
There's your plan. It should prove to be an exciting and beautiful exclamation point to another great outdoor, top-down season with the Music City Miata Club. Enjoy it while you can. Just RSVP to graype@bellsouth.net or (615) 794-0852.
