Island-Hopping Key West Christmas Parade
- Sponsored by the Serocki's
We were having dinner at the Foglight Foodhouse way back in January. And, Phil & Jan Serocki, two of our newest members, were discussing the fact that they had recently moved to TN from the Keys, where they had lived for several years. They also mentioned that the Miami Beach Miata Club participated annually in the Key West Christmas Parade in early December. And, wouldn't it be a real "Hoot" if the Music City Miata Club could join them on a run to South Florida for some island hopping and a Big Party in Key West in early December. If you've never experienced an nighttime Christmas Parade, with fully lit & decorated Miatas flowing thru a big Holiday Celebration in the Tropics, you are in for a real treat.
Well, we latched onto the idea of making the 900+ mile run to South Florida to hook up with the Miami Beach & Fort Myers Miata Clubs beginning on December 1st. Then joining several dozen little Miatas, hopping across the beautiful island bridges, to participate in the night time Christmas Parade thru downtown Key West on Saturday, December 4th.
So we brought this wild idea before our members at the February club meeting, by asking for a show of hands of anyone in the group who had never been down thru the islands to Key West. And, further, with our Miata tops down and the sea breezes blowing. Amazingly, a full 60% of our members indicated they had never been there, or done that. And, it was interesting the number who had it on their "Bucket List."
So here we are. We have the preliminary plans in place to make this run and have an early Christmas Celebration in the Tropics. We'll have an opportunity to check out Sloppy Joe's, The Hog's Breath Saloon, Fat Tuesday's, Margaritaville, and, of course, one or two of those highly celebrated & georgeous Key West sunsets.
We will be taking two days to get down & two days to return, with two days in the Keys. There is talk about either spending an extra day or so in Key West, or stopping in Orlando on the return trip. We have a couple of options on lodging in Key West. The Miami Club has standing, discounted reservations at a local hotel (~$140 per night), and/or, one of our MCMC members may be able to 'snag' some low cost accomodations at the Naval Air Station on Key West (<$60 per night). The Serocki's will try to hold our accomodation costs in a reasonable range ($60 to $85 per night) for the road trip down & back, while maintainining accommodation cleanliness & comfort.
Over the past seven months, several of our members have expressed an interest in making this trip. It's time we got a head count. So, if this sounds like a great way to get in the Holiday Spirit, AND, add a check mark to that list of things to do, or places to go, with some great people, let the Serocki's know by RSVP at pserocki@d2us.com OR (954) 254-3360.
