June 11 & 12
21st Great American Brass Band Festival
- Sponsored by the Rowlett's
Denny & Cheryl Rowlett are really excited about visiting this years edition of
the Great American Brass Band Festival in Danville Kentucky. http://www.gabbf.com/
They have made an advance scouting trip and have reported back with four thumbs held high. Danville is a pretty little town located in the heart of Kentucky and is the home to Centre College. Both the town and the college campus are a perfect setting for the annual Brass Band Celebration. http://www.gabbf.org/schedule
Some of the musical groups performing at this year's event include the Millennium Brass Band, the Jack Band, the U.S. 202nd Army Band, the Canadian Staff Salvation Army Band, the Walnut Street Ragtime Ramblers, the Circle City Stomper Clown Band and many more. Denny & Cheryl promise that you will find plenty to enjoy during this action packed run to Danville. http://www.gabbf,org/assets/83/Performers_Schedule_for_2010.doc
We will be gathering at the Mount Juliet Cracker Barrel at I-40, Exit 226 at 8 a.m. for breakfast on Friday morning. We'll saddle up for the run to Danville at 9 a.m., with a full belly, a full tank and an empty bladder. Be sure and bring your "Chairs-in-a-Bag" and plenty of sunscreen, and possibly some bottled water. Denny has some really great Miata roads picked out, as we move out along the edge of the Cumberland Plateau into southern Kentucky on Hwy 111.
We'll stop for lunch around 1 p.m. at "The Farmhouse" in Byrdstown, TN. http://www.dalehollow.com/farmhouse.htm Then we'll ease on up across the state line on Hwy 127 on through Danville and into Harrodsburg, the oldest city in Kentucky. ETA is 4 p.m. EDT. We'll bunk for the night at the Country Hearth Inn at 105 Commercial Drive in Harrodsburg. (859) 734-2400 http://www.countryhearthharrodsburg.com/services.php All smoke free rooms feature a Queen bed and a free breakfast at a fee of $78.25 + Tax. No need to contact the hotel. The room will be held for you at check-in. Individuals are responsible for payment unless cancelled 24 hours before check-in.
Following check-in, the Rowlett's have a great dinner planned at the new Eddie Montgomery Steakhouse (859-734-0656) with great food, live music and a real down home kick-ass attitude. http://www.eddiemontgomerysteakhouse.com/dev/ We'll chow down at Eddie's, then head out for the Great American Balloon Liftoff from 5:30 p.m. till 7:30 p.m., with entertainment featured by the Circle City Stompers Clown Band. Then back to downtown Danville for an evening of Brass concerts at Weisiger Park from 8-10 p.m. Then back to the Country Hearth Inn, where we will collapse for the evening.
Following breakfast at 8 a.m. on Saturday morning, we'll check out of the Inn and head back to Danville for more Brass performances at Weisiger Park, until the People's Parade starts down Main Street from 11a.m. till 12 Noon. You may wish to bring a parasol and step in behind the parade as it passes by. Then we'll meander around this wonderful little town, enjoy the artisan booths, do some shopping and get a bite of lunch.
More Brass entertainment follows at the Main Stage at Centre College, beginning at 1 p.m.. We'll probably stay through some of the Circle City Stompers street performance which begins at 4 p.m. EDT, then saddle back up and take some more great Kentucky backroads into Bowling Green, where we'll have dinner at Anna's Greek Restaurant & Bar, http://www.bggreek.com, featuring Greek, Italian & American, at 535 Three Spring Road. ETA around 7 p.m. We might persuade one of our group to join their belly dancer on the floor for a real show. Then on to Nashville around 9 p.m.
What a cram-packed two days. The Rowlett's would love for you to join them for this Brass Band filled trip. All you have to do is RSVP your intent to "Join the Fun" at dennyrowlett@hotmail.com or call (615) 302-2424. They'd love to have your company.
