April 23
Run to the Acropolis Greek Restaurant
Sponsored by David & Barbara Williams
The Music City Miata Club occasionally visits a restaurant that is so good it beckons our return. And every time we return to the Acropolis, we are handsomely rewarded for our effort. believe me when we say it doesn't require a lot of effort to talk club members into taking a road to Chattanooga to experience some of the best Greek/Italian cuisine we've ever tasted.
That is precisely why David & Barbara Williams are inviting you to join them on some great backroads to the Acropolis on April 23rd. We will be meeting at Shoney's on Hwy 231 (I-24 Exit 81B) in Murfreesboro for breakfast at 7:00AM. If you are a late sleeper, the Williams will be pulling out at 8:00AM and taking US 41 to Pelham TN. From there, the Williams will jump on some great mountain roads into Tracy City TN and visit the Coke Ovens, where 'coal was king' in Grundy Lakes S.P. The 1880's Coke Ovens were worked mostly by convicts leased to the mining companies by the state of Tennessee. Area mountain residents were unhappy having these convicts taking their jobs & living in their community, so they raided the mining camps overpowering the guards & putting the convicts on outbound trains. That happened numerous times & at least once resulted in the death of several convicts. The ovens are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Next we'll visit the oldest bakery in the state of Tennessee. The Dutch Maid Bakery in Tracy City was first opened by a Swiss family, the Bagenstosses, in 1902. The current owner still uses some of the early 1900's equipment. Their breads, pastries, cakes & cookies are hard to resist and might be just the thing to take along for a snack, since we will be having a late lunch. http://www.tnvacation.com/multimedia/dutch-bakery/
Just a short drive and we'll be at Foster Falls for a view of a magnificent water fall which plunges 60 feet into a green pool.
Back in our Miatas and we'll soon scale Raccoon Mountain http://www.tva.gov/sites/raccoonmt.htm and visit TVA's pumped storage facility completed in 1978. Water is pumped from the Tennessee River to a 528 acre mountaintop lake during low demand periods and released when needed to generate 1600 megawatts for up to 22 hours. This helps TVA to service peak demand periods. We will also enjoy a great "birds eye" view of the Tennessee River Gorge and the skyline of Chattanooga. Restroom facilities are available at all of our stops.
Next, it will be time to dash to the Acropolis Restaurant http://acropolisgrill.net/ in the Hamilton Mall in Chattanooga for a great selection of wonderful foods with a Greek flair. Save some room for dessert. Try sharing a piece of Baklava Cheesecake !
With our appetite satisfied, we will head toward home on an obscure road that borders the north shore of the Tennessee River.
So, there's the plan folks. Jump on board the Road to the Acropolis and RSVP to David or Barbara at bkwms48@localnet.com or (615) 347-4988. They'd love to share the day with you.
