Pioneer Drive & Dine
On Saturday, April 21, make plans to join Barbara and David Williams for an outing in the beautiful hills of southern middle Tennessee and visit historic sites of Tennessee’s Pioneers.
We will meet at the Cracker Barrel restaurant off I-24, exit 81 (2115 S Church St) in Murfreesboro with a “drivers meeting” at 8:45a.m. and depart at 9 a.m. (please arrive early if you plan to eat there as their food is good but service slow).
Our first stop will be at the Beechcraft Heritage Museum (admission $5) which houses the official Beech family aircraft collection from the beautiful early Staggerwing bi-planes, pre WWII twin Beech 18’s, the A-36 Bonanza flown around the world on a friendship tour, the King Aire and even the radical 2000 Starship.
An aviation design pioneer, Mr. Beech was born in Pulaski, and in 1932, he and his wife founded the Beech Aircraft Co. in Wichita, KS. These planes are immaculately maintained and periodically flown.
For lunch, we will travel just down the country road to Granny Fishes’ House located in a log house way down in a hollow (340 Shipman Creek Rd, Wartrace, TN) catfish, trout & chicken(fried, grilled), frog legs, steak, & fixins.
After lunch we will take twisty back roads to pioneer country and visit FallsM ill (134 Falls Mill Rd, Belvidere, TN), built in 1873, and on National Register of Historic Places (on TN Crossroads 2013 & viewable on their You Tube site). “Yes, I said ‘pioneer country’, Davy Crockett “king of the wild frontier” had a homestead in this beautiful farm country called “Kentuck”. We will visit the grave site of his 1st wife, Polly Crockett, who is buried here.
Also located in this area, we will stop at the Swiss Pantry, an interesting Mennonite store w/pies, cakes, cookies, cheeses, pasta’s & much more (10026 David Crockett Hwy, Belvidere, TN) We hope to see you on Saturday, April 21.
